The person posting it implied that it was a stupid question. Another user replied that it was only by asking questions like this that breakthroughs can occur.
I have some sympathy both ways.
We do need to challenge convention. On the other hand, I've had plenty of time wasted by people with little to no understanding of a subject insisting on exploring ideas which are already fairly well tested.
How do we find the balance between these two positions?
