How do you create consensus that lasts?
Hello Fellow Strategist,
NB: This is a restatement from last week's cancelled meeting.
Achieving significant goals takes time and requires long-term thinking.
But it seems that when new leadership joins, it's become almost the norm to change things up. Out with old and in with the new. It's as if they need to prove they've earned their place by changing things.
We see it in politics, where the incoming party immediately starts blaming the outgoing party for all the countries problems and begins almost immediately to unwind their flagship policies.
And we see it in private corporations where new leadership inevitably brings with it new strategies.
All of that makes it very hard to think long term and achieve significant goals.
But some countries get it right. Jamaica is coming to the end of its 21-year national development plan. In the corporate world, Toyota has sustained its Toyota Production System since the 1950s/60s. In the 90s Coca-Cola was planning for infrastructure development as far out as 2038.
What's the secret? How can we develop long-term strategies which survive changes in leadership and short-term trends.
